According to the World Health Organization, about 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes each year.
9% of adults in the world have diabetes.
Of these, only about 10% have the genetic type of diabetes called type 1 diabetes, and vast majority of about 90% of people with diabetes in the world have type 2 diabetes, considered a global epidemic.
The good news is that proper diet and exercise can potential cure type 2 diabetes.
Are you aware that the underlying process for type 2 diabetes is called “insulin resistance” that affects up to 52-71% of all US adults considered to be insulin resistant in various estimates?
Although we differentiate the two types of diabetes as type 1 and type 2, when it comes to treating these two, our strategies are excessively focused on blood sugar control as opposed to controlling the cause of type 2 diabetes! Since most diabetes medications actually increase the production of insulin which is already plentiful in the person with type 2 diabetes as they are considered insulin resistant, giving medications that only control blood sugar without changing the insulin resistance is not only futile but can also lead to further weight gain due to the profound anab0lic effects of insulin!
In other words, we treat type 2 diabetes with medications as if it is type 1 when the treatment of type 2 should be more directed at reversing the underlying insulin resistance through weight loss, changes in the diet, and other behavior changes.
Type 2 diabetes is a global epidemic causing enormous costs both at the individual level and at the societal level. The World Health Organization has recognized type 2 diabetes as one of the global threats to the humanity given its effect on the long term survival of the human race!
There are two types of diabetes
Type 1 that usually starts in child hood and type 2 that usually starts in adulthood although increasing number of teenagers and even children are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The other way to look at the two types of diabetes are to look at the underlying cause or pathogenesis of these two.
In type 1 diabetes, a person is unable to produce insulin due to failure of the pancreatic gland to produce enough insulin to meets the individuals needs to adequately control blood sugar. In type 2 diabetes, a person is able to produce a lot of insulin in the earlier stages but the persons body is not responding to insulin due to a process called insulin resistance!
Before we talk about ways to cure diabetes, we need to know what causes diabetes?
So, what is causing this epidemic of type 2 diabetes?
Dubbed by some as diabetes, it is traditionally believed that you gain weight, you get unlucky and you become a diabetic. Recent scientific evidence and thinking through the professional societies such as the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), it is increasingly clear that we got the cause and effect wrong.
It is the insulin resistance that is driving the epidemic of weight gain, overeating, food cravings and eating habits as insulin resistance makes a person go in to a state of metabolic starvation that makes them start over eating, according to Dr. Prab R. Tumpati, MD, founder of W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America.
INSULIN RESISTANCE CAN MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT!
Understanding the profoundly anabolic role of insulin and how a person with insulin resistance is not only over producing insulin but also gaining a lot of weight due to the anabolic effects of insulin is the secret of understanding the real reason why a person might be craving those starchy foods!
Why the traditional thinking failed on Diabetes?
Watch this amazing Ted Talk by Dr. Peter Attia explaining how we missed the bus on our understanding the cause and effect when it comes to diabetes and why we should stop blaming the victims for obesity, diabetes and start reversing insulin resistance to not only reduce weight but also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes – a must watch video for anybody interesting in understanding how type 2 diabetes
Insulin resistance, as the name suggests means that the body is not responding to insulin. As a compensation to insulin resistance, the body naturally tries to increase the production of insulin. This increased insulin production, while temporarily controlling blood sugars, can lead to profound weight gain, metabolic starvation by making your fat reserves unavailable to you! This state of fat stores being unavailable in between the meals is what triggers intense urge to overeat – things that we blame the individual for but are rooted in their insulin resistance! Understanding the metabolic starvation explains why a person who is insulin resistant tends to overeat, and crave starches! This is why blaming the obese for obesity is blaming the victim and until and unless we change insulin resistance, nothing changes!
You can use the popular W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America’s free online insulin resistance calculator to determine if you might be insulin resistant.
Insulin resistance and prediabetes usually have no overt symptoms that the patient might feel except weight gain, especially in the upper part of the body, or belly, cravings for starchy or sugary foods, changes in the skin in the neck, axilla, or other areas with skin tags, or darker thicker lines called Acanthosis Nigricans etc.
W8MD medical weight loss physicians are very well trained in recognizing the early or late stages of insulin resistance through proper physical examination and can help reverse this condition.
Insulin resistance can be cured by changes in the diet – by reducing the overall glycemic load of the diet, increased physical activity and through losing weight.
The Look Ahead Study from University of Alabama showed that type 2 diabetes, especially in earlier stages, can be cured by changes in the diet.
Insulin resistance is implicated in many processes including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in women, fatty liver, metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure etc. and can cause a lot of weight gain due to the anabolic effects of insulin!
Is insulin resistance the bottom of the ice berg of type 2 diabetes?
Yes, since insulin resistance affects over 51-71% of the population, it can be considered the bottom of the ice berg, while prediabetes, also called metabolic syndrome, is the middle of the ice berg that affects a third of all adults while type 2 diabetes is the tip of the ice berg affecting about 9-11% of the population!
What are the risk factors for getting insulin resistance and eventual type 2 diabetes?
Risk factors for insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes:
What can I do to reduce my risk of diabetes?
If you think you might be insulin resistant, the first step is to consult with a W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America’s physicians that are trained in recognizing and reversing the effects of insulin resistance.
As not too many physicians, including most endocrinologists are not too familiar in understanding the new thinking in the role insulin resistance plays in weight gain, we do get patients from far and near including other countries at times.
Let W8MD’s physicians help you reduce the risk of diabetes if you are insulin resistant, and reduce the need for medications and potentially cure diabetes if you already have type 2 diabetes!
