Of these, only about 10% have the genetic type of diabetes called type 1 diabetes, and vast majority of about 90% of people with diabetes in the world have type 2 diabetes, considered a global epidemic.

There are two types of diabetes
Type 1 that usually starts in child hood and type 2 that usually starts in adulthood although increasing number of teenagers and even children are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The other way to look at the two types of diabetes are to look at the underlying cause or pathogenesis of these two.
In type 1 diabetes, a person is unable to produce insulin due to failure of the pancreatic gland to produce enough insulin to meets the individuals needs to adequately control blood sugar. In type 2 diabetes, a person is able to produce a lot of insulin in the earlier stages but the persons body is not responding to insulin due to a process called insulin resistance!
Before we talk about ways to cure diabetes, we need to know what causes diabetes?
So, what is causing this epidemic of type 2 diabetes?
Dubbed by some as diabetes, it is traditionally believed that you gain weight, you get unlucky and you become a diabetic. Recent scientific evidence and thinking through the professional societies such as the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), it is increasingly clear that we got the cause and effect wrong.
It is the insulin resistance that is driving the epidemic of weight gain, overeating, food cravings and eating habits as insulin resistance makes a person go in to a state of metabolic starvation that makes them start over eating, according to Dr. Prab R. Insulin resistance, as the name suggests means that the body is not responding to insulin. As a compensation to insulin resistance, the body naturally tries to increase the production of insulin. This increased insulin production, while temporarily controlling blood sugars, can lead to profound weight gain, metabolic starvation by making your fat reserves unavailable to you! This state of fat stores being unavailable in between the meals is what triggers intense urge to overeat – things that we blame the individual for but are rooted in their insulin resistance! Understanding the metabolic starvation explains why a person who is insulin resistant tends to overeat, and crave starches! This is why blaming the obese for obesity is blaming the victim and until and unless we change insulin resistance, nothing changes!
Insulin resistance and prediabetes usually have no overt symptoms that the patient might feel except weight gain, especially in the upper part of the body, or belly, cravings for starchy or sugary foods, changes in the skin in the neck, axilla, or other areas with skin tags, or darker thicker lines called Acanthosis Nigricans etc.
